Training Employees is essential for your Business

For a business to thrive inevitably it will need a team of employees with the right experience, skills and tools to be effective in their roles.

There are many forms of employee training available and choosing the right combination ensures employees acquire essential skills, are able to work safely and can remain productive.

There are three main types of training carried out in the workplace:

This is a structured welcome process for newly hired employees. It introduces them to the company culture, their specific responsibilities, and essential workplace policies, ensuring they are prepared and supported to comfortably transition into their new role  and can include:

  • A tour of the premises, health and safety information,
  • Specific training on duties or equipment,
  • Introduction to colleagues,
  • Familiarising the employee with company policies such as holiday entitlement and absence procedures,
  • Work-station risk assessment.

This is practical learning that is carried out in the employees place of work and can include:

  • E-Learning  via online web based modules, courses and videos that allow employees to learn at their own pace,
  • Shadowing where an experienced member of staff will support the new employee to settle into the role, role play where senarios are created to see how an employee would perform under certain conditions,
  • Job rotation where the employee is moved through different departments to acquire a range of skills.

This is structured training and professional development that takes place during paid working hours, but outside of an employees’ normal day to day duties and focuses on acquiring new knowledge and skills rather than performing routine tasks and can include:

  • Formal education in the form of classroom learning at college, university through lectures and certification programs. This can take place at a college or training centre as a day release, evening classes or through distance learning.
  • Digital Learning using e-learning, webinars and online courses.
  • Mentorship & Coaching  with time spent shadowing colleagues or working with a supervisor on personal development.
  • Apprenticeships are a paid job that combines hands-on work experience with structured study. Employers pay the wages but are heavily subsidised or fully funded for the training by the Government. Every business qualifies for apprenticeship funding and the funding support available is based on the annual payroll of the business. The apprenticeships are designed to increase knowledge and skills and can assist an employee to work towards promotion or leadership roles.

Well-trained employees perform tasks faster and with fewer mistakes, reducing the need for reworks and improving overall operational efficiency.

Employees are more likely to stay with companies that actively invest in their professional development, which significantly reduces recruitment and onboarding costs.

Ongoing training ensures your team meets mandatory legal standards and safety protocols, reducing workplace accidents and liability.

Having the opportunity for workplace learning shows staff they are valued, which boosts workplace morale, engagement, and job satisfaction.

Consider the skills gap that your business has and measure the difference between the skills your business needs and the skills the employees currently have. Identify the types of learning that could improve employees ability to perform their role effectively. Talk to the employees to assist in identifying areas of their role that could benefit from further training.

Management need to show support for training in the workplace and encourage employees to expand their knowledge and skills in their job roles.

Employers should review training processes regularly, collecting feedback from the employees about their training experiences to fix any problems and to improve the types of training available to the employees. This also demonstrates to the employees that you are committed to their continued improvement which in turn will provide productive and financial benefit for the business.

As workplace practices evolve with the rise of remote and hybrid work, and new technologies emerge, businesses that anticipate changes and provide ongoing training and support to employees will gain a competitive advantage in the marketplace.
