Hold regular appraisals, one to one’s and pay attention to staff development

I can guarantee that an employee who is in dispute with their employer will say, “I didn’t even have an appraisal”. Although it is not a legal requirement, it is certainly a factor in employee’s minds when considering what constitutes a good quality employer.

When you think appraisals, you may be thinking that you need to have some elaborate scheme or process in place, or you may think that you are too small, or you don’t have the time to give appraisals, but it need not be a huge undertaking. All you need is to have a simple good quality procedure in place and designated appraisers who understand the process and goal of undertaking appraisals.

Aside from making employees feel that what they are doing on a day to day basis is being reviewed and recognised it gives you an opportunity to analyse what is working well and what needs improving across your business. Taking that time once or twice a year to really engage with your employees will make them feel that they are a real asset to your business.
