I am an Employment Solicitor advising both employers and employees on all aspects of employment law. With experience assisting both individuals and companies, on contentious and non-contentious matters, I have the empathy and appreciation to offer all my clients a viewpoint from both sides of the law; ensuring my advice is practical, commercial and cost effective.
I attended Carisbrooke High School, on the Isle of Wight but left the Island to study Law at the University of Southampton. I then gained a Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice, from the Oxford Institute of Legal Practice, awarded by the University of Oxford.
Since then, I have lived and worked in Buckinghamshire for almost 10 years, during which time I completed my training contract with Bruce Lance & Co, a firm based in High Wycombe, before joining Parrott & Coales LLP in April 2014 as a newly qualified solicitor. Parrott & Coales LLP have been based in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire since 1775, and have a large, well known regional presence. During almost 5 years with the firm, I was responsible for the Employment department and provided a full range of employment and HR services to businesses and individuals; and dealt with matters in the Employment Tribunal, as well as County Court and High Court claims.
Examples of recent work I have completed include:
- Successfully defending a claim of pregnancy related discrimination on behalf of a company within the betting industry;
- Successfully pursuing and settling a claim for disability discrimination and failure to make reasonable adjustments, against one of the UK’s largest retail motor vehicle groups;
- Successfully defending an attempt to enforce post-termination restrictive covenants against a Director of a nationwide construction organisation;
- Drafting from scratch, an entire staff handbook, contracts of employment and service agreements for a forecourt car valeting company that services the whole of the south east of England;
- Drafting privacy notices; updating data protection policies and contracts of employments and advising on GDPR Compliance for a worldwide confectionary distributor; and a sealant manufacturer operating worldwide.
Many of my clients were businesses who engaged me on a retainer basis, much in the same way as the HR Harbour service offered by the Real Employment Law Advice team
I believe it is essential for businesses and their legal advisers to get to know one another; to understand what makes your business tick and its ethos; and I have enjoyed long relationships with many commercial clients like this. I am happy to come and have a coffee with you at your offices; to have a chat and get to know your own team. A retainer relationship like this offers you the reassurance that you have a solicitor essentially on call to assist you when you need it, with the knowledge you won’t have a large invoice to pay as a result; allowing you to focus on what’s important, namely your business.
If you are an employee, I appreciate that for many of you, contacting a solicitor can seem intimidating, especially when you may already be anxious and upset over your dispute with your employer. I strive to provide excellence in service and technical ability; but in I hope, a friendly and empathetic way. I understand the importance of advisory services that are often a first port of call for many; and I have enjoyed holding pro-bono walk in sessions through the Citizens Advice Bureau and SSAFA, the armed forces charity. Real Employment Law Advice are signed up to the Armed Forces Covenant and once I have my feet under my brand-new desk, I will be looking to get involved with the local charitable advisory groups particularly on the Isle of Wight
Outside of work, I sat as a Governor on the Corporation Board of Buckinghamshire College Group for almost 4 years. Unfortunately, due to travel and time constraints, I have had to leave that post because of my move to the Island, but I hope to become involved in the local education system in a similar way soon.
I have returned to the Island married and ready to settle down and raise a family. Many of my friends and family have never left the Island, and I am very happy to have the opportunity to work in this unique community. When time permits, you may well find me walking up to St Catherine’s Oratory come rain or shine; struggling to stand on my surfboard at Compton Bay or greedily eating popcorn at the cinema.
I am extremely excited to be joining Alison and the team at Real Employment Law Advice, upon my return to the Island, where the new approach offered by her reflects the new nature of the Island; the traditional and the innovative.
